Starry Sweetheart

I absolutely love this pattern and the cover quilt you see here. The creation process was slightly bumpy, though. I designed the pattern on my computer, as usual, and felt like I had a winner. Then I made my first sample quilt top, using some solid fabrics. I loved the colors, which were a coral pink, but when the quilt started to come together, I realized that it had some issues.

The first problem I saw was in the contrast between the fabric colors. Because there was too much contrast between the different pinks and between the different neutrals, and not enough contrast between the lightest pink and the lightest neutral, the defining line between the heart and the background wasn’t as crisp as I wanted.
Also, I wasn’t really happy with the shape of the heart. I felt like it was too jagged and not rounded enough. Reluctantly, I decided to redesign the pattern and remake the quilt.

For the next quilt, I chose completely different fabrics. The Benartex Cotton Shot fabrics aren’t quite solids, they have a linen-like woven print that’s cozy and comfortable looking. Most importantly, I chose rich hues for the heart and paler hues for the background to provide a definite contrast.
I redesigned the pattern just enough to give the heart a pleasing, even shape. Each block is an Ohio Star block, with the coloring of the sections of the stars providing the heart design.
I’m thrilled with how this quilt turned out and I’m glad I decided to take the time to fix the pattern and remake the quilt. It’s had a great reception so far, so I think it was worth it. Let me know what you think.
